Maggie Brenner stared at Jennifer Lutz, head of legal, as she waxed poetic about the new protocol for cybersecurity at the hospital.

Her bestie, Rachel, elbowed her in the side. “Stop drooling.”

Maggie glared. “I’m not drooling.”

“I don’t know why you don’t ask her out,” Rachel whispered.

Maggie nodded at the podium. “Look at her.”

“What? She’s nothing special.”

Maggie begged to differ. Jennifer was tall and thin, absolutely killed any suit she wore, and had a fabulous smile. She was the epitome of special.

“You gotta get yourself out there,” Rachel said. “It’s been two years. Pretty soon, you’ll be too damn old for anybody.”

“Shh!” Maggie didn’t need the hundred or so people jammed into the conference room hearing about her failed love life, and she didn’t need the reminder that she was fast approaching fifty. “I’m petrified. It may be two years since Beth left, but it’s been fifteen since I dated anyone.”

“Well, here’s your chance. Ask Jen out for a coffee or something.”

“I can’t. She’s head of legal. I just work in HR. She’s…above my station.”

Rachel’s face twisted. “Are you bingeing Bridgerton?”

Maggie pressed her lips together and nodded.

Rachel leaned closer. “She’s perfect. You guys are the same age, and I know for a fact she’s single.”

Jen gave her closing remarks, and everybody stood to leave.

Rachel rose, but Maggie pulled her back down. “Wait. I gotta show you something.” She fussed around in her satchel and pulled out an envelope. “Got this in the mail yesterday.”

Maggie opened the letter inside. “It’s from my Aunt Tess.”

“I didn’t know you had an Aunt Tess.”

“I only heard her name sporadically over the years. She was kind of a black sheep in the family. Bit eccentric from what I can tell. She’s my mom’s aunt.”

“How old is she?”

“Ninety-two.”

“Holy shit. Good for Aunt Tess.”

“Right? Get this. She’s moving to France, and she wants to give me her house.”

“Give? Like, for free?”

“Yep. It’s a big brownstone downtown on Chestnut Street. She runs a used bookstore on the first floor and lives upstairs. I’m supposed to meet her tonight. Wanna come?”

“Can’t. We have dinner at Sue’s parents’ tonight. Blah.”

“Ew. Have fun with that.”
